Some countries have special medical requirements prior to allowing travelers
to enter their country. You may need special proof of immunizations,
or you may be immunized on the spot, sometimes in less than sterile conditions.
If you are planning a trip outside the United States, you can determine
if there are any special requirements, Visas or inoculations pertaining
to your destination.
Americans often take for granted health care, pure water supply, and
safe cities. That is often not the case in international locales. If
you drink the local water, you may become very sick as your body is not
immune to the parasites and organisms found in the local water supply.
If you do get sick, the local doctors and hospital may not treat you
unless you can pay up front in cash. In other large cities in South America,
for example, criminals target local tourist areas, beaches and hotels.
There are carjacking's, and sometimes wealthy travelers are kidnapped.
Tourists relaxing on sunny beaches can encounter parasites that penetrate
the skin of bare feet and other exposed body areas. Some diseases, like
hepatitis or malaria, may be resistant to a cure long after your return
home. These diseases may be a permanent souvenir that may affect your
health and life span.
Taking kids with you? Did you know that Brazil requires that where only
one parent, or guardian, is bringing children under 18 into the country,
that parent or guardian must present written authorization by the absent
parent (or parents). This authorization must be notarized, authenticated
by the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate and then translated into Portuguese.
